Toxicoinfection is an important form of foodborne disease in which viable microorganisms and their biologically active products contribute to the development of an acute pathological process in the human body. The condition is characterized by a complex interaction between the causative microorganism, microbial virulence factors, intestinal epithelial function, host immune mechanisms, and environmental conditions associated with food production and storage. Toxicoinfection may manifest as an acute gastrointestinal syndrome accompanied by nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, fever, weakness, and varying degrees of dehydration. In severe cases, disturbances of electrolyte balance, circulatory instability, acute kidney dysfunction, and systemic inflammatory complications may develop. The present article examines toxicoinfection as a multidisciplinary medical and public-health problem. Particular attention is given to the biological characteristics of causative microorganisms, routes of contamination, pathogen-host interactions, mechanisms of intestinal dysfunction, clinical assessment, laboratory diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment principles, and preventive measures. The analysis emphasizes that the severity of disease is determined by multiple factors rather than by the presence of a microorganism alone. The infectious dose, toxin-producing capacity, food matrix, duration of exposure, age, immune status, nutritional condition, and comorbidities may influence clinical outcomes.
