Abstract

Acute hepatitis A remains an important cause of acute viral hepatitis in Central Asia. Liver injury in hepatitis A is largely immune-mediated, so combined assessment of biochemical markers and inflammatory cytokines may help to describe severity. In this single-centre sample, hepatocellular injury markers and IL-6 reflected the severity of hepatitis A far better than bilirubin, TNF-α, IL-1β or routine haematological indices. These findings are hypothesis-generating and require confirmation in larger, independent cohorts.
